Discover the Demoiselles Coiffées of Sauze-du-Lac

Located below the village (right next to La Palatrière campground), the Demoiselles Coiffées (or fairy chimneys) site is a fascinating geological curiosity not to be missed. Sculpted by erosion over thousands of years, these columns of sedimentary rock topped with a darker boulder seem to stand guard over the lake. A marked trail allows you to admire them up close and learn about their history through informational signs. Another trail starting from the campground lets you walk right past them in less than 20 minutes.

Very different from traditional sandy beaches, it stands out for its unique layout, featuring large terraces that descend in steps directly into the lake’s crystal-clear water. How to get to Sauze-du-Lac?

The village is located on the D954 departmental road, which circles Lake Serre-Ponçon. It is about 20 minutes fromEmbrun and 15 minutes from Savines-le-Lac. Its central location makes it a perfect stopover during a road trip around the lake.

When to visit?

  • Summer (July–August): To fully enjoy swimming at Port Saint-Pierre and the summer atmosphere of the harbor.
  • Spring and fall: The ideal seasons for photography and hiking, when the trees are ablaze with color and the surrounding peaks are dusted with their first hints of snow.
